Who is this platform made for?

Although my classes are open to anyone, you may find it helpful to understand and consider the lens through which I live — and teach.

I've devoted my life to empowering women; from my summers growing up mentoring young women at summer camp; to the thousands of hours I've spent training hundreds of people about the ancient science and philosophy of yoga; to the years I've been leading life-changing wilderness retreats and expeditions for women in the arctic of Alaska. This is the lens through which she lives her life.

Throughout the majority of my own yoga training, I didn't realize I'd been learning practices designed by men, for men. Once I learned the path of the divine feminine — the origins of so many practices revered in the west as "yoga", I knew I had to dive deeper to find the path women have walked. After years of study in many different disciplines, I knew my role was to take what I'd learned and teach other women how to know themselves on this path — and to be able to see themselves as an important (and visible!) part of the kriya yoga lineage.

During my classes, I teach from a woman's perspective, not from a place of exclusivity — but from a deep desire to cultivate shared human experience. And the only group of people that knows what it's like to be women... is women.

Although I love leading retreats, and portal for taking kriya yoga classes online is for anyone who feels called to enroll, the fact is: I've experienced firsthand the power of being in circle with other women, and because of those experiences, I've become the woman I am today.

I realized that I've been learning "yoga" from women my entire life — even though it wasn't officially called that! For me, that camaraderie and understanding women feel when in circle with one another isn't found anywhere else — and that supportive experience is what I offer through my classes.

What students are saying...

Since practicing with Mollie, I've become more confident, less anxious, more heart-centered and compassionate, more inspired, and more devoted.

I have learned to prioritize my learning and personal development and commit even more fully to my spiritual journey. There have been positive changes within my relationships as well — more growth and better communication.

Another interesting thing that happened is I began noticing muscles awakening, which has led to more alignment and more strength.

— Patty P.

What type of yoga will I experience?

My teachings are primarily inspired by the ancient Kriya Yoga lineage of the Himalayas, vinyasa styles of yoga, and a desire to offer the world more than just "poses" when it comes to yoga.

You may learn how to meditate, how to properly practice asana, and feel the alignment within your own body. You'll dive deep into a study of your SELF — emerging from this experience a brighter version of Y-O-U.

Here are a list of what's available on "The Yoga We Need":

  • The Cosmic Month Ahead
This new, updated module is added each time the Sun moves into a new astrological sign in the sky (usually around the 15th of each month) Students will find a practice for the sign (Taurus, Gemini, etc.), a practice for the planet that rules that sign, and a breakdown of important dates/times of the astrological transits of the month!

  • Himalayan Kriya YogaIn my Himalayan Kriya Yoga classes, you can expect focused and intense movements and kriyas that are specifically sequenced together to move energy. It's like cooking in the kitchen... It works like this: I choose a recipe for a certain purpose (Activating Power, Letting go of Fear, etc.), and I use a specific set of ingredients, including Kriyas, Pranayamas and sometimes asana, and those ingredients come together to "bake" the desired energy within us! If you're looking for asana, I'd recommend going to one of the other categories!

  • Himalayan Hatha Yoga
A typical Hatha Flow is a class that focuses on proper alignment, conscious breathing and mindfulness. Emphasis is placed on longer held poses, flexibility, balance and concentration... and the "Himalayan" means the class features Kriya! Kriyas are like yoga recipes — combining movement, with asana, breathwork and a handful of other things, all together for a specific purpose. They leave us feeling transformed and energized and are the most sustainable way to quickly shift your energy. In a typical Himalayan Hatha class, the overall intention is to relax and rejuvenate the body and calm the mind. We will spend about 20 minutes in warm-up, intention setting and kriya, and 40 minutes moving through strong postures, basic alignment principles, and learning how to adapt challenging poses to your own body if needed. All levels encouraged and supported.  The class pace is medium! You will leave feeling like your body (and mind) experienced profound release, leaving you more ready than ever to tackle what your day holds.

  • Himalayan Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa flows — or flows that link breath with movement — exist to get your body moving... and the "Himalayan" means the class features Kriya! Kriyas are like yoga recipes — combining movement, with asana, breathwork and a handful of other things, all together for a specific purpose. They leave us feeling transformed and energized and are the most sustainable way to quickly shift your energy. In a typical Himalayan Vinyasa, we will spend about 20 minutes in warm-up, intention setting and kriya, and 40 minutes moving through vinyasa (flowing with breath) to warm up the body and physically build heat to prep the muscles. The class pace is fast, but all levels could easily give it a try and feel successful doing so! You will leave feeling like your body (and mind) experienced profound release, leaving you more ready than ever to tackle what your day holds.

  • Gentle Yoga
If you are new to yoga, you may find these classes particularly welcoming. There will be a mild flow and it moves at a pace that allows everyone to follow along easily. There will also be modifications offered to anyone that is challenged by a particular pose. If you are nervous about trying yoga or getting back into it, this is the perfect class for you. Additionally, if you prefer a softer, mindfully paced class, Gentle Flow will be a perfect addition to your weekly routine.

  • Sound Bath
This is a class where you may do a few relaxing poses to start, and then create a nest to lie down and enjoy the sound from singing bowls. Although it's not the same as being in person, Mollie tries her best to carry the experience through the camera!

  • Yoga Nidra
This is a class where you may do a few relaxing poses to start, and then create a nest to lie down and enjoy a guided relaxation. Sometimes it feels like you fall asleep, but it's said that 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra can have the same effects as 3 hours of REM sleep on your mind and body! This is the ULTIMATE relaxation — and sometimes I offer vivid visualizations called "Jiva Journey." Jiva means "soul" in Sanskrit.

  • Goddess Flows
If you've ever been curious about the stories of the Goddesses of the Yogic Tradition, then this section is for you! We don't teach that these goddesses are floating deities outside ourselves — although we might picture them that way... truly, these goddesses represent different energies that are *already within us*. We harness a particular goddess in order to bring up that specific goal within us. So Dhumavati helps us let go, Parvati teaches us about uniting the masculine and feminine within us, Durga can help us muster courage... and so many more!

  • Course and Training Previews (annual members get exclusive discounts!)
In addition to so many standard classes details above, you also get access to custom classes from each of Mollie's other offerings, from courses to trainings and more. If you're an annual member of "The Yoga We Need," you'll also get discounts of 10%-100% on certain courses and trainings with Mollie.

Mollie Busby is a driven entrepreneur, writer, dog musher, and backcountry skier with the spirit of a summer camp counselor and a love of wild places.

Although her yogic path began in a vinyasa-based school in the West, Mollie found her way to the Himalayas to learn the ancient path of kriya yoga, including multiple return trips for further study, intensive practice, and to deepen her self-awareness. Mollie has trained hundreds of yoga teachers in the past decade how to teach asana, kriya, pranayama, and meditation — and above all else: To know themselves.

Prior to her work in yoga, Mollie (then) Shambeau was a Wisconsin gal through-and-through, who thought her life was destined to be devoted to fashion journalism. A few years into that role, she met Sean Busby at the funeral of a very special young man named Jesse who'd passed away from type 1 diabetes. That was the day her entire life changed. The rest — it seemed — was history.

Mollie and Sean fell in love, and she moved west to be closer to him in 2010. That year, they founded Riding On Insulin in Jesse's honor -- a nonprofit which hosts ski/snowboard camps for kids with type 1 diabetes. They were married on September 24th, 2011, a wedding that they unknowingly planned on what would have been Jesse's 15th birthday.

In the years that followed, Sean and Mollie moved to Montana, where Mollie ran Riding On Insulin as Executive Director for 7 years, until Sean took the helm in 2017 as they started migrating further north to the wilds of Alaska. Although the pair both still work for the organization today
, Mollie shifted much of her focus in those days to yoga, including founding four yoga studios called Yoga Hive. Her Montana and Wisconsin branches have since been sold, and continue thriving today. Yoga Hive is known for its inviting vibe, friendly instructors, and willingness to show anyone that yoga is for everybody and every body.

In 2019, Mollie and Sean relocated to what’s considered the “Himalayas of the Arctic,” Alaska’s Brooks Range. In Wiseman, 63 miles north of the Arctic Circle, she and Sean hand-built an off-grid wilderness lodge and retreat center, Arctic Hive — which has been featured in Outside, Backcountry Mag, USA Today and Oprah Daily. The pair lives in the mountains (7 hours from the nearest town!) and hosts yoga + northern lights retreats, 200- and 300-hr yoga teacher trainings, learn-to-mush retreats, and dogsled-assisted backcountry skiing/snowboarding adventures. Mollie also offers live and pre-recorded online yoga classes, Jyotish readings, and Yoga Alliance continuing education courses.
